Researcher morf13
Obtains Unredacted Copy of
Possible Communication from the Zodiac
Postmarked October 17, 1970,
at Berkeley, California
Note: Project
MK-ZODIAC appreciates that the images of these documents have been
provided by morf13
who is the administrator at the internet forum http://zodiackillersite.com.
The researcher, who
is known by the online username as morf13, obtained copies of
previously unreleased FBI reports.
On May 27, 2011,
morf13 received a copy of the communication postmarked October 17,
1970, at Berkeley, California.
The name of the recipient had been redacted from this document.
On August 18, 2012,
morf13 received a copy of the unredacted document
which showed that the communication had been mailed to Edward C. Adams
(who has been deceased for over five years).
This document had
never before been available to the public.

The San Francisco
Chronicle had published an article titled "Gilbert and Sullivan Clue to
Zodiac" on October 12, 1970.

The article showed a
postcard postmarked October 5, 1970, which had been mailed to the San
Francisco Chronicle.
This communication to
Edwards C. Adams mimicked the postcard shown in the article.
For example, the date
of this particular article "Mon., Oct. 12, 1970" was cut out and pasted
on this communication to Edward C. Adams.

There is a brief FBI
report about this communication.
According to the FBI
report, Edward C. Adams had a suspicion that the card could have been
sent by a former patient who lived in Berkeley circa 1970.
The name of the former patient is redacted from the FBI report.
Presumably, the
former patient was investigated by law enforcement.
It is still an
unsolved mystery who sent this communication.

Another person of
interest in the Zodiac case may have a connection to this message in
which the date "Mon., Oct. 12, 1970" had been cut and pasted from the
San Francisco Chronicle.
In the San Francisco
Chronicle on October 12, 1970, there was a brief article on page 35
about an event which occurred the day before.
On October 11, 1970,
there was a ceremony at Round Top Peak in which Gudde Ridge was named
in honor of Erwin G. Gudde who was born on February 23, 1889, and died
on May 6, 1969.
http://oaklandgeology.wordpress.com/2012/02/19/gudde-ridge/
Gudde Ridge is at
Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve (southeast of Tilden Regional
Park).
Gudde Ridge has a
view of Eichenloh, the house in which Erwin G. Gudde had lived in the
hills of Orinda, not far from the home of Edward C. Adams.
Erwin G. Gudde was
the author of "California Place Names: The Origin and Etymology of
Current Geographical Names".
Erwin G. Gudde was a
onomatologist, someone who studies the history of names.
In this book, Erwin
G. Gudde explained the origin of the name for Paradise.

Gareth Penn attended
the University of California, Berkeley from 1968 to 1972.
Erwin G. Gudde was
specifically mentioned in a message from Gareth Penn dated May 24, 2010.
http://d550.blogspot.com
Gareth Penn wrote:
"Speaking of my undergraduate years at Berkeley, at that time, there
was a professor in my department named Erwin Gudde. Professor Gudde was
a linguistics scholar who had devoted years of study to California
Indian languages. This led him to compile a list of place names derived
from those languages, and, since he was a German, a Teutonic compulsion
to thoroughness drove him to expand his list into a dictionary of all
California place names; that dictionary is now the standard work on the
subject. In the entry on the town of Paradise (Butte County), Gudde
notes that a railroad map published in 1900 misspells the place name as
"Paradice." The Zodiac murderer misspells the word the same way in four
documents; Gudde and I were in the same department, so it is amazing
that none of those who comment on my criminal activities has ever
brought up this stunning piece of circumstantial evidence. I never took
a course from Gudde, and I donīt even know what he looked like, but he
must have been influential; the results speak for themselves."
