In Search of a Serial Killer

I submit to you my inquiry into my search for the true Zodiac serial killer by stating at the very first that this search is necessary because of the falsification of the documentary evidence which is of historical record concerning the narration of the Zodiac serial killer.
Scholarship teaches that there are rules setting the boundaries of examining evidence in order to weed out malice and uninformed research into any given discipline. In regards to assorted people proclaiming Zodiac suspects, experience teaches the necessity of establishing criteria by which reasonable people can determine which of the multitude of Zodiac suspects, if any, might be the true Zodiac serial killer.
The standard of determining whether a suspect merits serious consideration must necessarily be strict respecting the Zodiac because of the reality of intellectually dishonest people wishing for assorted profane reasons to be connected to the identity of the infamous serial killer almost at any cost.
Therefore, the standard stated here is based on three specific factors: To be the true Zodiac the suspect must be connected to the Zodiac codes and ciphers and communications, and the five Bay Area murder sites, and the timeline of those murders.
There are one hundred points of reference setting the boundary by which a reasonable person can separate the myriad false Zodiacs from the one true one -- The documentary evidence supports the standard stating there was only one true Zodiac and one alone. Therefore, to assist the inquiry I have established one hundred points setting the boundary of who could possibly be the true Zodiac from the fakes.
These points makeup the standard which people may use to judge and weed out the false Zodiacs who, later in this manuscript, are having found to be scammers with no true knowledge of the actual Zodiac serial killer. None of the Zodiac suspects, but one, meet the one hundred points.
The essence of the points are stated herein. The true Zodiac must have a connection to the following items... He must have been in the San Francisco Bay Area on the timeline of the five murders. He must be connected absolutely to Vallejo, to Benicia, to Lake Berryessa, and to San Francisco. He must be proven to have been in those locations and have some direct relationship to them. He must have a relationship to a Timex watch, to the Badlands or South Dakota. He must have lived in a basement in 1969-1970. He must have in the period of 1969 worn horn rim glasses. He must have some connection to the word "EXORCIST" spelled backwards "TSICROXE". There absolutely must be a connection to who he is connected to the cipher phrase "GYKE". He must be connected to the phrase "GOOD TIME" because he connects it to his codes. He must have been a photographer. He must be connected to a newspaper, a teletype machine, and teletype paper. He must have a connection to a film developer. He must know how to sew. He must be white. He must have been from 30 to 40 years old. He must have knowledge of guns. He must have been in the Armed Forces. He must be connected to "⅄AM" and "RTG" of the Mt. Diablo code. In some manner he must connect to the phrase "Dicky-bird". He must have at some time a tit bird. He must resemble the San Francico Police Department wanted poster of 1969. He must be connected to a 1940-1950 Studebaker and or a Karmin Ghia. He must be proven to have some active connection to mythology.
And he must connect to all of the above or he is not the Zodiac serial killer. None of any of the 2,500 Zodiac suspects match all the above points of reference. And this means none of the most proclaimed Zodiac suspects match this criteria but one.
Who is the true Zodiac serial killer of the 2,500 failed suspects? And if he has appeared, so to say, in the lineup of the dozen fake Zodiac suspects, why was he not arrested and why have assorted law enforcement agencies failed to identify him?
Who then is the true Zodiac serial killer?
The Zodiac serial killer was appearing in the year 1969 sending out letters and post cards and ciphers and codes, telling of those he had killed and those he was planning to kill, and he was clearly using leitmotivs of an evil mythology to cloak his murders.
He was proving that he killed two young people in their Rambler station wagon parked in a remote area near the town of Benicia. He killed them on the 20th of December, 1968. By the next year on the 4th of July, 1969, he struck near Vallejo, killing Darlene Ferrin and wounding her male companion. He next struck at Lake Berryessa, where he was wearing a kind of a cyclops mythological costume with a black hood and a pre-Aztec circle and cross symbol sewn on it. He was stabbing to death a young Seventh-day Adventist college student from Pacific Union College in Angwin, and severely wounding her male companion. It must be noted the Book of Revelation is a keystone of this religion and that scholars acknowledge the apocalyptic book is written in the language of mythology.
But the killer of these devotees to the Book of Revelation did not identify himself as being the Zodiac serial killer until after he murdered a Yellow Cab driver he picked up near the Geary Theater in San Francisco. His name was Paul Stine, he was a student of philosophy, and when he was killed the Zodiac tore a section of his bloody shirt and began sending to the cops fragments of it to prove he was the Zodiac, and it is an established fact that the Zodiac said the murder occurred at Maple but the cab was found at the corner of Washington and Cherry.
He would also confuse the authorities by his fake clues he would be leaving. He stated he hated the cops, and he said there was more glory in killing a cop than a kiddie. And, as for kiddies, he threatened to plant bombs to blow up school buses. He was expressing joy in by how baffled everyone was about who he might really be. Then he went ahead and did exactly what he said he was going to do, and in his ciphers and codes and communications used aspects of a satanic mythology to brag about how he was "in control of all things".
For example, he made it clear he was going to make it more difficult to figure out who he was killing, and in time he was stating he had killed at least thirty-seven people, including occult symbols in his cards and letters. And because people were not wearing any Zodiac serial killer buttons with his Teotihuacán-like sign on it he was punishing society by killing a man with a .38 revolver. The man was a cop named Richard Radetich writing a ticket on Waller Street.
As of today there remains a $100,000 reward for his killer. The Zodiac also was taunting the public and police saying he was hoping they did not think he -- the Zodiac -- bombed the Haight-Ashbury police station, and, of the police wounded, one died, so, if the Zodiac actually bombed the Park Station, he killed another cop. He boldly was expressing his contempt and hate of the police saying they needed to have their noses rubbed in their booboos, and he got off over the years also by taunting them.
Investigative reporter Paul Avery discovered that the Zodiac had murdered a female college student from Riverside on the 30th of October, 1966. Her killer sent out a typed confession in which he spoke of how he "battered" her and warned more killings were to come.
When Zodiac read of this discovery, he bragged how wonderful it was they found out this killing of his, but that there were "a hell of a lot more down there" of such killings.
And in his many letters and post cards, all with evil symbols on them, he was telling all kinds of things about who he might be, such as he loved movies, how he had a special killing identity, and he referred to "Badlands", a movie about a spree killer, and, in another card, he implied he killed someone burying her "around in the snow", and soon investigators figured out he was meaning a nurse, Donna Lass, who, by the way, was from the Badlands state, South Dakota, and he adapted lyrics from the Mikado opera, but left out the key phrase "Dicky-bird" and left it up to anyone to figure out that the plot of the Mikado circles around a woman who might be "buried alive".

He seemed obsessed with buttons and knew all about how the "blue meanies" were seen as the enemy of the counterculture; and he knew all about guns, and was telling of the many ways he was killing people. He eventually sent out his mountain of the devil code, i.e., Mt. Diablo. He was a tracker and said he lived in a basement somewhere in the Bay Area, probably San Francisco. He used words only a reporter would use --"don´t bury me on the back pages"-- and, in his Riverside confession, the paper it was typed on was from an old teletype machine. He also expressed an interest in photography, and, when he was a really big story, and CBS´s Walter Cronkite was speaking of him, there were riots going on at Haight Street, and Tim Leary was in prison, and Carlos Castaneda´s books of psychedelic mythology were on the bestseller list.
Yet, as the years were going by, he was not caught and he was not arrested. From time to time, he would send out taunting postcards until, by 1987, his last message referred to the movie "Cars", and a death machine, and the mythological pagan holiday called Halloween, implying he was still out there killing people and, by reason of this letter, he was about to kill someone else.
And, as the years were going by, people were reading about a legion of evil serial killers. It was the time of the rise and fall of serial killers such as Ted Bundy, Wayne Gacy, and the Green River´s Gary Ridgway, but only the antichrist of them all, the Zodiac, was doing his murders by the spirit of mythology and because of it he remained free to kill.
From about 1985, there began to rise up a series of people, all of them claiming to know who the Zodiac serial killer was because all of them were unconsciously drawn into the power of his evil mythology. Robert Graysmith published two books about the Zodiac, and, in his first book, he came up with two possible suspects, but, like everyone else, he was completely missing the dramatic significance of the mythology connected to the Zodiac, thus was failing to name the true one. Years later, he published a second book, in it claiming a now dead child molester, Arthur Leigh Allen, was the Zodiac, and, for evidence, the proof was the poor guy wore a Zodiac wristwatch, never mind the fact that the Zodiac´s wristwatch was a Timex found by where he murdered Cheri Jo Bates in 1966.

It was making no difference to Graysmith that both handwriting and DNA evidence proved that his suspect, Allen, was not the Zodiac. The view was Allen had a secret pal who licked the killer´s stamp for him and, like all pseudo Zodiac suspects, he was totally unable to connect his suspect to the coded mythology of the Zodiac.
In Graysmith´s case, it is somewhat understandable this delusion: the big Hollywood film called "Zodiac", based on his book, was just released and it was kind of disagreeable at the same time to have Allen ruled out as the Zodiac, but in later years Graysmith admitted he might have been wrong stating, "maybe he would turn out to be living in a cabin".
Graysmith stood out in a legion of people who were convinced they knew who the Zodiac serial killer was, but then, by 2010, there had been about 2,500 Zodiac suspects, all of them found wanting. Even so, there remained a dozen or so hardcore cases of very determined people who were willing to risk their fortunes and credibility in stating that their Zodiac suspect was after all the true Zodiac serial killer, like moth to flame, unable to resist the fascination of his evil mythology, and became part of the cult of the Zodiac.
It was apparent that none of them (much less homicide inspectors) had a clue in the very years of the Zodiac serial killer´s mythological rise of Joseph Campbell who wrote the four-volume "The Masks of God" and was credited by Lucas Films for inspiring the "Star Wars" series. None of the sleuths who were convinced they knew who the Zodiac was had any idea that the great success of the Zodiac was because he was a manifestation of the spirit of mythology when the zenith of his fame occurred during the mythology of the New Age spirituality.
In the competition to be the true Zodiac were a gallery of interesting suspects with their " prophets" proclaiming them in books, on CDs, DVDs, tape cassettes, and sworn statements. But none of these curious and unique people were remotely close to being the mythic evil genius that experts said the Zodiac had to have been; and, after all was said and done, none had hardcore evidence which had been tested by time.
None of them were able to successfully link their shabby evidence to the established facts of the Zodiac killings, nor were able to present a meaningful scaffold upon which to hang their facts to match to the established Zodiac mythological symbols nor in context to the zeitgeist of his murders. But for these people their delusional belief about their suspect being the Zodiac was all they really needed.
Books were written and published about them... Gareth Penn was claiming the guy from the East Coast, Michael O´Hare, was the Zodiac with zero evidence but fantastic logic based on a misinterpretation of the use of the word "radians" by the Zodiac, yet Penn himself was a linguist, and a learned man. Penn told me in an exclusive interview in 1987 his Zodiac suspect was just "a joke".

In 2010 there was Raymond Grant publishing online his book stating he had solved the Zodiac mystery and his solution was that Gareth Penn, Penn´s father, O´Hare, and O´Hare´s mother are all four the Zodiac serial killer -- As they say, "Fools rush in where wise men fear to tread."

There was not a shred of evidence found in the Unabomber cabin to connect Theodore Kaczynski to the Zodiac in spite of clever theories leading to premature conclusions. Full disclosure -- In 1995, I myself was detained by the FBI briefly because I had made a tape cassette linking similarities from the Unabomber to the Zodiac. Later this tape cassette called "Madera Canyon" would come to the attention of the FBI´s Unabomber Task Force. And the FBI, because of a critical misunderstanding over it, believed it was a bomb and once they played it, they were in a rage because of the documentary evidence in it connected to the true Zodiac serial killer who later found out about it.

And "The Zodiac-Manson Connection" suspect was in prison at the time of some of the Zodiac killings, and the book by Howard Davis about him being pure theory and imagination. As of summer 2010, false Zodiac suspect Bruce Davis was still in a California prison.

Some of the most pathetic Zodiac suspects included " my Uncle Bubba the Zodiac" - this Zodiac suspect turned out, like most of the others, a joke foisted on an ignorant mass media; and someone living in a tenderloin hotel room with a bottle of wine who got drunk and began believing the son of Howard Hughes was the Zodiac according to his written decoding illusions.

Then there arose the case of Deborah Perez who claimed in 2008 her adopted father, Guy Ward Hendrickson, was the Zodiac and he had her as a child write the Zodiac letter to Melvin Belli. Perez hired a high-class Beverly Hills publicist who helped her get on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Times. Perez failed a polygraph examination as to her Zodiac "evidence". Graysmith, however wrong he was respecting his Zodiac suspect, is knowledgeable over the Zodiac murders and he stated Perez was one of the most pathetic of the wannabes proclaiming a Zodiac suspect.

And so it was like this, all kinds of fools decided to hang their hats on the totem pole of the Zodiac mythology yet not even knowing what they were doing. It seemed getting drunken was helping some of these sleuths to discover a Zodiac suspect, such as a drunken lawyer claiming the Zodiac walked in one day to his office, confessed his crimes, and then walked out. This got him on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle because the mass media had always bowed down to the Zodiac serial killer, and published headlines about him, but editors knowing these people were a sign of collective delusion.

Still their stories helped keep the Zodiac alive. Finally it became the belief of almost everyone, including the authorities, the Zodiac now was never going to be caught, and because of the cult of the Zodiac which had arisen, it had become a story of "cry wolf, cry Zodiac". And so it was passing back into mythology from which it arose, which to everyone meant myth, that is, delusion. The secular civilization with its causal foundation made dealing with an actual manifestation of living mythology impossible, thus any true discovery of the Zodiac killer -- not a fake Zodiac -- would fail because of the archetype of disbelief would shipwreck such a discovery, and the Zodiac himself would intervene to kill to destroy any such discovery if anyone found him out.
The promoters of the fake Zodiacs would not be realizing this. To them it was fun to spin urban legends about the Zodiac because they themselves did not think the true Zodiac would ever be caught, just like people in the mass media and the FBI.
One of the Zodiac pushers manufactured his own evidence about his stepfather, Jack Tarrance, and specialized in giving talks about his "Zodiac" and for television shows he would trot out his fictional evidence, but almost everyone knew Dennis Kaufman had no idea who the Zodiac serial killer was, but why spoil the fun, it was always interesting to see how effective these people were in deluding the public.

Another one of these people was a former Los Angeles homicide inspector by the name of Steve Hodel who got his book about his father, George Hodel, published only because he had another book published proclaiming his father was the killer of the famous Black Dahlia. His evidence for now believing his dad was also the Zodiac? His father once lived in Manila on or near a street named "Zodiac". His book is a journey into a total failure to convince anyone sane how his father could have been the Zodiac.

Others developed websites to promote their suspects. For example, one site proclaims a teenage boy named " Sandy" who stabbed an old man named Vern Smith in 1963. His police sketch bore a vague resemblance to the 1969 Zodiac wanted poster and this being three years before the Riverside killing. There was no other evidence, but the site has hope that maybe one day there will be some. However, it must be stated the website www.mk-zodiac.com, unlike others, is only objectively researching Vern Smith´s killer -- even if he was not the Zodiac, maybe the actual killer could be tracked down and brought to justice.

Still another person, Sandy Betts, was convinced that the Zodiac was alive as of 2010, personally stalking her. For some people unknowingly have found their meaning of life from the mythology of the Zodiac killer and the cult of the Zodiac so paranoia is not their only evidence. But, who knows, maybe the true Zodiac really was to be found in Hernando´s Hideaway?

None of these suspects could in anyway be directly related to the Zodiac ciphers, codes, or communications, but never mind this fact because the Zodiac had become a celebrity story because of the mythology of it and all these people desperately wanted to have a piece of its mythological action. And all these people falsely proclaiming their Zodiac have unknowingly become a tragic Greek chorus chanting their liturgy in fear that the true Zodiac serial killer will be found as they unconsciously are hoping in fact the Zodiac will not be found.

The reader can go to the internet and will be able to explore numerous websites devoted to the Zodiac serial killer and a legion of pseudo Zodiac suspects. Also, the reader will find certain Zodiac killer websites devoted exclusively to the idea that no one will ever be able to find out who the Zodiac serial killer was so don´t even try to do that or you will be denounced. And this was because of the controversy now going on the internet respecting the Goldcatcher dimension of the story, and one main example is that of the researcher Mike Butterfield who was now debunking the mythology of Goldcatcher and the Zodiac which has arisen because of what will be related in this story. He having become obsessed with a narration called "Goldcatcher´s Confession". And joining him were many others to the point of posting this narration on the internet, including making a transcript of it available, and this is because of reference to God in it. The response being of such a nature that one can only shake one´s head in disbelief because they seem to be having atheistic fits over it.

But what I am searching for here is a real serial killer who was proven to have been killing various people, and whose last letter was published in September of 1987, and who implied he was still very busy doing his thing, killing people at random. And the name of this serial killer was in fact the Zodiac.
What actually happened to the Zodiac serial killer? Who was he and why did he send a letter to the Vallejo Times-Herald in September of 1987?
Once again, full disclosure -- in October of 1969 I was the only person in the counterculture to write and publish " A Message For The Zodiac Killer" in the then underground newspaper the Berkeley Tribe.
This is what I have learned from my years of investigation, including the true story of that 1987 letter. Thus my expertise regarding the Zodiac killer dates from 1969 so that by 1987 I was having eighteen years of some depth of experience of a relationship to the Zodiac story. In short, I was there in the beginning, when the Zodiac serial killer was making headlines in San Francisco. And only the San Francisco Examiner could match my totally unique connection to the Zodiac with their own message to the Zodiac.
But the law enforcement agencies and mass media investigating the Zodiac did not connect him to the counterculture but rather as someone from the mainstream. My original nonconformist perspective was totally ignored by the mass media and the homicide inspectors, and by 1985 Graysmith himself had not a clue that I had published that crucial story, nor by the beginning of 2008 was there anyone researching the Zodiac story on the internet aware of this keystone article.
But all of this changed drastically in March of 2008 when many other people have actively been researching the conclusions of my ordeal and investigation of my discovery about the Zodiac serial killer, in particular Tom Voigt of www.zodiackiller.com. Also credit is due to many people who have dug down into the roots of my research and connection to the Zodiac story, of them, Paul, Carey, and Lauren, including research by Judith and Davidmm of www.zodiackiller.com whose diligent fact checking has helped tipped the balance of the evidence regarding the Zodiac. Also Project MK-ZODIAC appreciated that the story of Goldcatcher and the Zodiac had become the greatest forbidden story in the mass media and especially in San Francisco and has carefully examined the network of evidence respecting what is being stated here about myself, Goldcatcher, and my connection to the Zodiac serial killer.

Yet by 2010 a difference of views was being expressed regarding strategy to present the evidence connecting Gaikowski to the Zodiac, although I had been told by the key people they absolutely knew Gyke was the Zodiac serial killer. But this difference was because of my narration of my ordeal called "Goldcatcher´s Children", how in it the issue of religious liberty was involved and how that I stated I believed my struggle over the Zodiac was because God wanted me to stand up against the evil he was doing. While they were making it known that it was okay to fly the flag of the Zodiac murders, they found themselves unwilling to stand up for the "banner", as they called it, for Goldcatcher, and decided, as a matter of policy, to conceal the major aspect of the true story of the Zodiac because they did not want their subscribers to know just how much God was involved in it.
In other words, I myself discovered the identity of the Zodiac serial killer and am being called Goldcatcher because of how, by this sign from the beginning, I struggled to fight the true Zodiac serial killer as he began murdering people, even after all the years from my discovery in 1986, I am living in a cliff hanger situation because of the catastrophe which came down on me over this story. Also I am very well knowing how a little dramatic what I have been stating here seems but it is the truth. And the legal aspects of this story, including likely lawsuits, are sadly possible consequences over what I endured respecting the truth of this story. And this because I found out by hardcore evidence that my friend, Richard J. Gaikowski, formerly of South Dakota, was the Zodiac serial killer.

A note of caution... Because of the civilization we live in and by how Hollywood has ripped off the legacy of mythology, my destiny to discover the identity of the true Zodiac killer has placed me in the company of Franz Kafka. The "God is dead" culture in which all this was taking place has put me in a Kafkaesque situation that has been making the burning truth of it seem too incredible to believe. Thus I am very aware of the prejudice bound to confront the truth of it, but, if the reasonable reader stays with the story I am telling, he or she will, I hope, come to realize that, while the truth is extraordinary, it has already persuaded thousands of people, and none of the people proclaiming their fake Zodiac have more than one handful of believers, if that, like the truth of this story does.
In 1969 I was living in San Francisco and I was a freelance writer for both the San Francisco Good Times and Berkeley Tribe underground newspapers; but at the Good Times I had a column called "Cop Watch" which had been suggested to me by the editor Dick Gaik (as he was then known). He also outlined what he wanted me to write about the mainstream serial killer, the Zodiac, who was getting headlines, but when I submitted the article, he changed his mind and suggested, "Why not get it published in the Tribe?"
Thus, this was in October of 1969 that my " A Message For The Zodiac Killer" was published, as referred to earlier.

And so to begin... I had just returned from being an expatriate from the Greek island, Crete. I was living in a 1979 GMC van when the several novels of mythology I had written did not find an agent. I was reintroduced with Gaikowski who, at that time, was both cab driver and a computer hacker. Both of us had lived in Berkeley in the late 1968-early 1970 period.
He had given me a ride in 1983 in his yellow cab to the airport, telling me how he had recently given the mythologist Joseph Campbell a ride to the airport. I was knowing I was finding Gaikowski interesting, for example, "Why was he hiding things in his own storefront apartment?" He had got excited when I spoke of visiting Küsnacht, Switzerland where Carl Jung, the great depth psychiatrist of mythology, once lived. And this was because he had undergone seven years of Jungian therapy at Mt. Zion. His doctor was an old lefty named Carl Shiparo, and when his visits ended, he went back and stole the paperbound quarto copies of " Jung´s Seminar on Nietzche´s Zarathrusta" -- It had not yet been published for the public by Bollingen.
What happened was that I, who am an antiquarian and classicist knowing German, Greek, and Latin broke the Mt. Diablo code of the Zodiac in 1986, finding in it a murder confession by my friend Gaikowski. Unlike the " Greek chorus" , I was unable to believe it could be true so I set out on a six month secret investigation of Gaikowski, and, much to my horror, I was realizing I had stumbled into a nightmare which was to last eighteen years. Some, if very little, of this story was presented on the History Channel´s show called MysteryQuest in 2009, and in a new documentary by America´s Most Wanted, date of release as yet unannounced.

I was actually secretly tape recording Gaikowski, while desperately trying to interest various law enforcement people of what I had discovered. I was promised assistance by Melvin Belli, but, when I at last came to visit him in his office on Montgomery Street, Belli was in a rage because he had misunderstood me thinking I myself was the Zodiac serial killer and there was nothing Belli wanted more than to defend the famous serial killer. But, when he found out I was a friend of Gaikowski who was the Zodiac, the lawyer was telling me, since he had already stated he wanted to defend the Zodiac serial killer, he could not and would not assist me in any way even though I had sent him a tape cassette using the name Goldcatcher, not Zodiac.
In this narration, which I made while camping in the Badlands of Gaikowski´s home state of South Dakota, I never used his name, and I also sent later a copy of it to Gaikowski himself. He thought it was hilarious because of the mythic music background found on all the narrations I have referred to in this essay. They being a wholly original style called "crying mantras" based on rearranging and adapting from mystic crying steel guitar riffs never heard before. And being the only appropriate background music for such a bloody nightmare involving a killer of children. But to Gaikowski they were "funny" and he told me he had heard nothing as "far out" since he first listened to the comic opera called "The Mikado".

And, at this time, I had overwhelming circumstantial evidence Gaikowski was the Zodiac -- most of which now is on various sites on the internet -- and I had found a paperback book with Paul Stine´s signature on the flyleaf in Gaikowski´s storefront hideout in San Francisco. The book was "Plato and Parmenides" by Frances Macdonald Cornford. Hidden between the pages of this book were Polish bonds which had belonged to the father of Gaikowski.

And, by then, I and a technical instructor at the UC Berkeley campus named David Blackman had proven to ourselves that my decoding of the Mt. Diablo code absolutely had to be valid, and FBI agent Walter Lamar had in fact verified Blackman´s statement of it.

From there on out this story would have ended with Gaikowski´s arrest as the Zodiac but, as fate would have it, everyone, including myself, seriously underestimated the cunning of Gaikowski the Zodiac, and the unbelievable ineptitude of the law enforcement people. For example, when I contacted Ken Narlow of the Napa County Sheriff Department, Gaikowski had already secretly put a tracker under my now legendary van, legendary because, among other reasons, there were symbols of mythology painted on it -- much less the fact for eighteen years Gyke the Zodiac and I were in a constant drama involving this van.
The problem was that Robert Loomis, who had once worked with Gaikowski for the Vallejo Times-Herald branch at Martinez, California, blew the whistle on me. When I had come around checking on Gaikowski, Loomis alerted Gaikowski who, in turn, with typical cunning, did not at first tell me this in order to set traps for me to find out why I was checking on his murky past and thus became extremely suspicious of me, for example, why was I asking him about the " battered" typewriter he wrote about in his swan song when leaving his Martinez newspaper? Also, when in 1986 in a private interview with Maria Zoller, his sister who is now deceased, she told me Richard was en route to southern California to study a strange religion, and when asked, " which one?" she said, " the Book of Revelation".
And I had found out Gaikowski under the guise of his being a medic (as he was) went to the Loma Linda Medical Center to seek employment, and he came to believe the Book of Revelation was an occult book, with the code of the antichrist in it, and he needed to know this because of what Cecelia Shepard told him in 1965 when he gave her and Cheri Bates a ride with his girlfriend Darlene Ferrin en route to the manhunt going on at LakeBerryessa which he was covering for his newspaper.
In the beginning, Gyke, as he will now be called (because it is clearly to be seen in the Zodiac´s three-part cipher broken in 1969 by the Hardens), trusted me and did not believe I would go to the cops about him. Gyke told me bits and pieces of his murders before I did go to the police. In fact, Gyke claimed he was giving one of the two Schwinn bikes I had stored in his storefront basement to a little boy he knew named Kevin. That little boy would turn out to be Kevin Collins, a famous kidnapping case, whom Gyke kidnapped and killed on February 14, 1984, and later he alluded to Collins by allegory. In 1984 he claimed Collins´s mother had written him a long letter protesting she did not want her little boy hanging out at Gyke´s storefront even if he was teaching Collins how to do computer programming.
Once Gyke knew I was going to cause trouble, he went down the block from where he was living in the Mission district to Capp Street. A friend we both knew called Irving Rosenthal of the 1969 Good Times newspaper days lived there, and nearby sometimes Gyke use to take an old lady in his cab to the grocery and bring her back to her place, also on Capp Street, to help Helen in with her groceries. He killed her, robbed her of her stack of cash she kept in her dresser, and, with this money, he more or less told me he was giving me a break, for me to go back to Europe and live with my " mythic" twin Zwillingsbrüder in England, and forget about him being the Zodiac.
But I said I could not take blood money. And a few months before he killed the old lady, Gaikowski and I both knew an Allied cab driver named Leonard Smith. The story about our links to Smith are too detailed to be told here, but Gyke told me how he had set up Smith to kill him involving the Fairmont Hotel to connect it to the Zodiac story and to duplicate the killing of Paul Stine. Gyke shot Smith in his Allied cab 54 as it came by where I was parked on the 31st of July, 1986, and I saw this killing.
Then, after he murdered the elderly lady, this was about when the stuff hit the fan. And it only got bloodier. Now, so that the reader understands what was occurring, keep in mind that, when I found out Gyke was the Zodiac serial killer, what the Zodiac did was go out and start a new series of killings. On various secret tape recordings Gyke and I are talking about these killings, and, on one of them, the use of the name " Goldcatcher" comes up because Gyke (or Gaik) understood our fight would be taking place under this mythological name to confound his use of evil mythology by the sign of "This is the Zodiac Speaking" -- He got his idea from Nietzsche, " Thus Spake Zarathrusta".
At the same time there were two official investigations going on about Gaikowski in late 1986 and early 1987. Both of them ended up in a dangerous law enforcement cover-up and a catastrophe. By 1987, Fred Shirasago of the California Department of Justice was suppose to be investigating Gaikowski. In fact, the state´s handwriting expert said that Gyke´s handwriting resembled the Zodiac´s.
At the same time Ken Narlow wired me up attempting to send me into the cyclopian´s lair but all this backfired ending up in a series of murders -- Gyke once referred to himself as a cyclops because he had but one eye -- He had already told me the reason he used his cyclops costume at only at Lake Berryessa was because it was his " antichrist" ritual outfit to slay the Seventh-day Adventist Cecelia. He had told me that, in spite of what the surviving Seventh-day Adventist victim said, one of the two eyes of the costume was sewn shut, and above the circle and cross he had in small letters sewn " 666" because, he laughed, that was the code of the antichrist.
These murders caused both Narlow and Shirasago to close their investigation beginning with a nine year old boy named Eric Coy who in 1987 lived in the town of Martinez. He lived a couple of blocks from where Gaikowski himself once lived when he was the managing editor of the Martinez Morning News-Gazette in 1965. When Gyke murdered Coy, I contacted the then current editor of the News-Gazette, a man named Osmond, but Ken Narlow told Martinez Police Chief Bud Beckwith the Zodiac did not kill the lad, who in turn told the editor and he decided not to write about Gaikowski being the Zodiac. Decades later, on the 6th of May, 2010, the News-Gazette has begun to write about Gyke being the Zodiac.

On a secret tape I told Shirasago how Gyke the Zodiac just killed Eric Coy and, realizing that he had not acted fast enough to arrest Gyke, said, " He´s not killing everybody!" THEN HE CLOSED HIS INVESTIGATION. Now, there was someone seen near where the little boy was stabbed holding an umbrella. Narlow, Detective Lacy, and I were riding around in Narlow´s car right after this killing going by Gaikowski´s storefront hideout on Guerrero Street. We all could see a red umbrella opened up in Gyke´s front window and Narlow asked me, " Why the red umbrella?"
And I replied, saying, " Gyke told me he used it to stab Eric Coy with."
Now Red Umbrella was to match Red Phantom of his mythology.
But this was not the only reason Narlow closed his investigation. About this time there was a killing of a woman near the Napa State Hospital of Narlow´s territory. She was found with the same graffiti seen at all of Gyke the Zodiac´s 1986 and later murders. Odd how Gaikowski was once in a padded cell in 1971 in the same wing where he once could look out to see later where the dead woman, Terry Hoover, was found, or so he told me. I rode over to the murder site with Detective Lacy who saw Gyke´s graffiti and he said, "Are you going to solve this one too?"
It was this murder which really was freaking out Deputy Narlow, especially since Narlow was about to run for sheriff and so Narlow decided to close his flawed investigation of Gaikowski.
These killings were why the Zodiac was not arrested. They had not stopped him in time, and I knew beyond a shadow of doubt that because of this they were going to have to sacrifice me, and by doing this, they knew that they were giving Gaikowski the Zodiac a pass to kill anyone he wished as long as he wished, and thus they allowed this notorious murderous maniac to go free, and so I was given some money and told to leave town.
And there was nothing they nor anyone else could do to stop him now from new killings because if the public found out, heads would roll, careers would be destroyed. The only choice was to cover up what had happened and also the fact, as years were going by, there were numerous fools rising up, all claiming without damning evidence that they were knowing who the Zodiac serial killer was. And this also was how people in the mass media began reacting, unable to deal with the babel of fake Zodiacs. Yet, over the years giving publicity to each of the main fake Zodiacs stories, but when it came to the true Zodiac, in San Francisco there was a media blackout over Gyke the Zodiac. The San Francisco mass media was unable to come to terms with the fact that the Zodiac serial killer was one of their own.
The wonderful thing for Narlow and Shirasago was that I was seen as the perfect person to do this to. I was a crooked cop´s dream. To them, I was a classic loser, and a spiritual shipwreck because I once worshipped a Golden Calf. This was true, I had indeed strayed from the straight and narrow path I once believed in, when, in 1953, I was studying the Book of Revelation because my Uncle Thomas Thoroman was a Seventh-day Adventist, and I had come to bitter regret over my idolatry of the Golden Calf.
They knew I once owned a townhouse on Cherry street in Berkeley back in the early 1970´s that now is worth millions where I once had the Zwillingsbrüder Library Sanctuary and even wrote and published a scandalous book called "The Secret of the Golden Calf" in 1974, under the nom de plume "Zakatarious" which was published by the House of Zwillingsbrüder Press.

What investigators, including those of the FBI did, over the years was dig into my past and what they found made it easier to discredit me, because if I had been a citizen of means this could not have happened, for in me they had their white trash black man just where they wanted me to be. As a kid I was a car thief who in 1956 and 1959 stole a fancy fishtail Lincoln and Cadillac in those years just to joy ride in them. While I know of course stealing them was wrong, I remember telling the reformatory sociologist that as for the Lincoln I believed it was a car of mythology from a vanished world, and ditto for the fishtail Cadillac.
For the Cadillac I went to prison and disgraced myself by my disastrous fascination with the mythology of the Third Reich, so I was just a callow kid but, once I got out early in 1966, I never got in trouble with the law again until I found out Gaikowski was the Zodiac killer -- So, by 2010, all that happened forty-four years ago.
Now the truth about who I am is the truth, and just because it was my destiny to have a genius of mythology I am not going to lie about who I am or my unique past. Telling the truth will by some be used against me especially in light of the theme of this essay. And this is because to many in the secular civilization in which we are all living will see this as a means to discredit me because I do not fit into their paradigm of expectations just because I happened to know Gyke the Zodiac serial killer. My cards of who I am are on the table for all to see, including those who desperately hope I am going to be proven wrong about the identity of the Zodiac serial killer.
They hope in vain.
But back to how Narlow, always a blustery guy, would make a big deal of it when other police agencies called him over what I was telling them of Gaikowski´s murders. Narlow would say, " This guy is goofy and he´s been busted lots of time for Grand Theft Auto," but he did tell the South San Francisco homicide detectives he had been investigating Gyke as the Zodiac and that caused them to realize they were dealing with a serial killer over the murder of Yvonne Fruit, and, in turn, I myself was no longer a suspect.
And yet there were sensational things about my past -- I am hoping the reader will kindly recall that the evidence of my life demonstrates for reasons known to God alone I do have a fate irrevocably connected to mythology -- and one example was my tragic fascination with the mythology of polytheism and the Golden Calf. One of the most incredible things was the Golden Calf aspect to the story -- which Narlow said also proved I was a fruitcake.
The fact is police science cannot comprehend the irrational dimension of life, and to them, mythology is irrational; and this ultimately harmed justice because by labeling me as a fruitcake and besmirching me because I was not a soul who could easily be categorized, ruined their understanding of what I was in vain trying to tell of how Gaikowski was using an evil mythology to get away with his murders, and the consequence was the mysterium horrendum overcame them, and allowed Gaikowski to go free and start killing people again.
Let´s just be direct and honest: I was the classic tragic genius, and as the reader knows God gave me the genius of mythology, and there was not one homicide inspector I ever met (or state or federal agent) who could understand this about me because of their culture blinders and the only way they could peg me was to say that "this guy is nuts." Ditto the mass media.
And, as for my being a genius, I do not mean an IQ genius, but as understood from the Renaissance, that is, like Faulkner or Beethoven -- it is the whitebread anti-genius culture that has forced me to say this, because it is the only way to explain my situation I fell into regarding the Zodiac serial killer and how God wanted me to confront it.
And this was because, with utmost cunning, Gaikowski was telling me in 1986 that he was killing all these new people under the sign of the Golden Calf knowing I was trying to hide my past over this outburst of pagan mythology in 1973-1974. A group of people and I paraded the Golden Calf down Telegraph Avenue in 1973-1974 and by 1975 there was even a church of the Golden Calf founded on the book I wrote, but I had nothing to do with it. And Gaikowski himself attended one of the Golden Calf rock concerts in Berkeley, bowing down to it in 1974.
I cannot be expected to lie about these events because they surely did happen.
Now, over a decade later, he knew of the legal mess which had arisen up over it and the controversy connected to it and how I had long ago renounced all that evil so he decided to use it to help destroy any attempt to investigate him ever again as the Zodiac. And by a stroke of evil genius decided to connect his new murders to it. And, because of this, Gyke was feeling very secure in telling me exactly those who he would be killing, before they would be killed, and where their corpses could be found, threatening to leave a Golden Calf near the corpses and spray painting the phrase " Glitter Doll" with the Zodiac sign, and by Glitter Doll he was meaning the Golden Calf. He knew that connecting the Golden Calf murders to his Zodiac ones would make anything I said sound like Looney Tunes, but then Gyke was an expert in using Looney Tunes way back to 1965 when he decided on his evil Zodiac mythology as a cover for his career as serial killer. -- He also knew the secular culture we were living in was basically illiterate when it came to mythology. -- "I like screwing with what some people think is reality" -- an actual quote from Gaikowski's internet site.

Gyke the Zodiac had told me he was going to write this letter and the reference in it to the death machine and the movie "The Car" was because Gyke was going to kidnap and kill by rope a little boy -- he actually told me he would use his hands -- and in the casino where in fact he did kidnap Alexander Harris and led him out from Whiskey Pete´s at Stateline, Nevada, and strangling him, dumping his body under a brown mobile home.

In the lobby of the casino was the 1934 Ford "death machine" of Bonnie and Clyde on display and stuffed between the pages of a 1984 Newsweek with Kevin Collins´ photo on the cover was a picture torn from an art book showing a painting of a Golden Calf by Poussin and I found it there because Gaikowski said there would be a picture in a magazine that I had seen in Gaikowski´s hideout, and that this magazine would be in the lobby on a table and from that lobby he would kidnap a little boy. It was this same Newsweek with Kevin on its cover. And I knew Gyke used to say, " Kevin´s in Heaven!"
From this time on through the next eighteen years, it was impossible for me to get anyone in law enforcement to seriously listen to what I was saying about these new murders of Gaikowski because, first of all I knew I had to hide the Golden Calf part of what he was doing, but also it always came back to the murders of Leonard Smith and Eric Coy. Thus, it always led back to the catastrophe of 1986-1987 and how there was a super big time cover up over the original Zodiac serial killings and those thirty-seven people the Zodiac said he had killed, and actually did kill based on what through the years he was telling of those killings.
And as for all the post Zodiac killings, it no longer mattered because Gyke suddenly died on the 30th of April, 2004. But right up to near when he died, San Francisco Homicide was giving me the brushoff even as I was telling them of Gaikowski´s most recent killings, and how just before he died he was planning to go out in a blaze of glory committing mass murder.
Then there is the remarkable part of this story about how the History Channel found the DNA of Gaikowski under a stamp of a letter he had sent to his friend Robert Loomis in 1969, and contacted San Francisco Homicide asking them to compare it to their DNA of the Zodiac, but they refused to cooperate. And, from 2001 to 2004, I myself had asked San Francisco Homicide Inspectors Carroll and Maloney to just go over and demand Gyke give a sample of his hair or saliva to check for DNA comparisons, but they would not do it. And they would not do it because I had told them of three killings which took place on their watch by Gyke the Zodiac, and it was just too dangerous thereafter for them to do it.
Lieutenant Mike Stasko of San Francisco Homicide has stated that, it was now a matter of policy, they would not talk to any one in the media about Gaikowski or Goldcatcher. And this was because near the end, weeks before Gaikowski the Zodiac died, I contacted Mayor Gavin Newsom and, as soon as San Francisco Homicide found this out, it held a news conference stating it was closing their Zodiac case, not telling the public the last weeks before they closed it, they were allegedly investigating Gaikowski.
This is the classic meaning of a major police cover-up.
But this is where this incredible story is at this time. The latest news is members of the family of Zodiac victim Paul Stine have found photos of Gaikowski at the funeral of the victim -- but I have yet to see it verified. And his first cousin Patty Gaikowski lived on Washington Street and exactly 18 blocks from where she was living celebrating her birthday when her cousin Dicky-bird killed his buddy Paul Stine on her birthday, the 11th of October, 1969.
According to Zodiac researcher Tom Voigt, he thinks Dan Olson of the FBI´s cryptology section is now examining the Zodiac´s Mt. Diablo murder confession decoding which, in 1986 I first decoded and thus found out Gaikowski had to be the Zodiac serial killer. Even so, I remain skeptical of the objectivity of the FBI because of bitter confrontations I had with them over the years. Gaikowski´s guns and photos he told me he took of some of his killings remain hidden somewhere, either in his old hideout, or places unknown, or the unknowing hands of friends of Gaikowski.
Also, there seems to be no power on earth to force San Francisco Homicide to compare Gyke´s DNA to their DNA of the Zodiac, although Police Commissioner Jim Hammer has said that it is his hope to get money so that all cold case homicides can have the DNA connected to them examined, and, remember, San Francisco Homicide now has the DNA of Gaikowki to compare with the DNA they have of the Zodiac serial killer, and, if this occurs, then we are very close to a sensational revelation about Gaikowski and what I am stating here about him.
Let the public decide whether by this sign of Goldcatcher is true or false by a fair and objective comparison of Gaikowski´s DNA with the partial profile of the Zodiac. Let Phil Bronstein and the San Francisco Chronicle be given the results of the DNA testing so that there would be no danger of another cover-up about Gaikowski. If the DNA evidence states he could not possibly have been the Zodiac killer, then I will be willing to seek psychiatric help so to deal with my fantastic delusion. But if the DNA states Gaikowski had to have been the Zodiac serial killer, then let the San Francisco Chronicle proclaim by a headline "GOLDCATCHER CAUGHT THE ZODIAC!"
Of course, this would not be possible because it has long been established that Phil Bronstein would not himself assign any investigative reporter over what for years I had been telling them regarding Gyke being the Zodiac, and also, as for my being willing to undergo psychiatric examination with the help of the San Francisco Chronicle if the DNA evidence ruled out Gyke as not being the Zodiac is absurd, and I stated this because I have long known that because of the complexity of the Zodiac mythology of murder, that my discovery of it would result over time with assorted dummkopfs proclaiming me crazy which I most definitely am not.
Remember the strategy of the Zodiac was to project a crazy mask because he was knowing by playing the "Crazy" card both law enforcement and the mass media, having a low threshold of understanding theories of mental disorders and the history of madness and psychoanalysis, meant he was sure to get away with his career of murder.
As for the DNA evidence proving Gyke was not the Zodiac, it can not happen. Also, while DNA was found under a stamp of a letter to Loomis, it could be possible that it was not Gyke´s DNA. There would have to be -- if the DNA said it is not Gaikowski -- a comparison such as was done recently in how the Los Angeles cops caught the serial killer called the Grim Sleeper... They got DNA from his son, and used it to connect to his father, Lonnie David Franklin.
Also, the decoding of the Mt. Diablo code is like DNA in its exactitude and it is most definitely a murder confession by Richard J. Gaikowski.
Fragments of this story are found at various places on the internet, and have been subject to national television shows, and assorted newspapers including the 6th of May, 2010, story in Gaikowski´s old newspaper in Martinez and I myself recently spoke to the editor who was asking about the red umbrella.
And it does seem rather odd that, as of this date, there has never appeared a story about Gaikowski in any San Francisco media, but this is because this has become the greatest forbidden story in the history of San Francisco. Yet would it be possible Phil Bronstein, who recently wrote a knowledgeable column on the brain and serial killers, might be willing to pick up this gauntlet I am throwing down because he´s a good guy who likes to fight alligators and also knows the power of a big story? Only if first someone in law enforcement told him Gyke´s DNA profile matches that of the Zodiac, otherwise conventional wisdom rules the San Francisco Chronicle editorial policy about the Zodiac serial killer.

Finally, it must be pointed out, by the time Gaikowski died, there were many influential friends of his and the movies he made who understandably do not want their friend to be the notorious Zodiac serial killer. And one of the friends was knowing the San Francisco Chronicle columnist named Chuck Nevius and Mayor Gavin Newsom telling them there was no truth in Gaikowski being the Zodiac -- It was only an urban legend, or so I was told by my sources. Also, some years ago, the gay Supervisor Harry Britt, as well as old time Lefties, also knew Gaikowski, and, in fact, belonged to Gyke´s 1986 Haymarket Democratic Club which he founded to celebrate the cops killed in the 1886 Chicago Haymarket riot.

Also, friends of Gaikowski´s 1969 underground newspaper called the Good Times were very upset how their old boss Gyke, who wrote under the name Gaik, was being connected to the Zodiac. These people were very nervous that the Good Times was, de facto, a serial killer´s mouthpiece, and what it all boiled down to was that it is very politically incorrect to say that their guy was the Zodiac serial killer, very definitely in San Francisco, yet over the years some of these people said Gyke did sometimes speak about his being the Zodiac killer, but laughing when telling them this, even on his death bed.
But perhaps the last word of this story should be from Gyke the Zodiac serial killer´s August 7th, 1969, San Francisco Examiner letter: "This is the Zodiac speaking. In answer to your asking for more details about the GOOD TIMES I have had in Vallejo, I shall be very happy to supply even more material. By the way, are the police haveing a GOOD TIME with the code? If not, tell them to cheer up, when they do crack it they will have me."
The code which Zodiac refers to has the name GYKE in it. The misspelling of " having" is how the Zodiac spelled the word, and the phrases in his letter were not highlighted but printed as "good times" and "good time". And when Gyke the Zodiac was writing it, he was in his basement room at 2377 Bush Street, San Francisco, of the Good Times newspaper´s commune when he wrote it.
And when he was writing it, I was living on Silver Avenue in San Francisco with a young Rainbow Richey, my mythic twin brother, who had seen Gyke in our apartment´s small bathroom replacing the fake beard he was wearing during a review of a movie I made about the mythology of books called "Sun Drenched Books".
And later we were to meet Robert Winter, this in 1970, where he lived in the basement of 2377 Bush Street of the Good Times commune, and Winter wrote under the name Windcatcher, because in those years everyone used a mythic name. Winter told me in 1987 on a tape recording that once in 1970 Gyke began raving, calling out, so Winter ran into Gyke´s section of the basement.
A water pipe had burst, flooding it, and Gyke was in a rage because a sheet of paper he had been using had dropped into the water, and when Gyke was picking it up, Winter told me he could see lines of strange handprinted signs, and when Winter asked him, "What is it?" Gyke said, "It´s an ancient Babylonian code I´m interested in" which obviously he had worked on for a long time, but now it was all wet, so he tore it up, tossing it into the still flooding basement. Winter told me in 1987 that he had thought the sheet of paper contained across it and down it only the phrase "MENE MENE TEKEL" over and over again and he imagined he was going to use it for a story he was going to write and put in the Good Times about the handwriting on the wall facing "Amerika", as that was how we were spelling the name back then.
And this was why later, when he wrote as the Zodiac alluding that his basement washed out, "I was swamped out by the rain we had a while back", this is really why he wrote that.
I challenge anyone in authority or the mass media or otherwise to deconstruct what I have stated in this essay because it can not be done, every aspect of it is backed up with volumes of documentary evidence.
Let´s be clear about this as to what this report is all about. Because the DNA of Richard J. Gaikowski is supposed to be available at the San Francisco Homicide Department, it is about attempting to get someone in the Department of Justice to agree to compare the DNA of Richard J. Gaikowski to the DNA of the Zodiac serial killer.
Now, as for all the other Zodiac suspects who have been admittedly concisely referred to in this report, each of their sponsors should put their money where their mouth is and demand that the DNA of each of their suspects be examined so that we can find out once and for all who of these suspects is really the Zodiac serial killer.
Therefore, to conclude, this report has explained the reasons behind why I have stated that, beyond a shadow of doubt, that Richard J. Gaikowski was the Zodiac serial killer and I am waiting with others for someone in law enforcement to step up to the plate for the sake of justice and those that he killed, that his DNA will at long last be compared to the DNA of the Zodiac serial killer.
